Make Yourself a Mountain

“Look at Mount Fuji… Instead of wanting to be like this or that, make yourself into a silent, immovable giant. That’s what the mountain is. Don’t waste your time trying to impress people. If you become the sort of man people can respect, they’ll respect you, without your doing anything.” -Miyamoto Musashi

(Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, p. 680)

The folly of my youthful striving — to become something that seems respectable — shows itself more plainly with each passing day. I no longer wish to trouble myself with the opinions of others, nor trouble them with mine.

Instead, I pursue full oneness with life. To become one with the mountain, and in so doing become the mountain. There are entirely too many distractions on the road to full humanity. Underneath them I hear music, thrumming and deep.

These notes are the breadcrumbs… leading me along the Way.
